U.S. Air Force Pilots Blockchain Technology With Constellation & SIMBA Partnership

This week the United States Air Force (USAF) announced this week it is now working with two blockchain projects. Constellation will be utilized for interoperability of legacy and future data types. The SIMBA Chain will be used to secure the Air Force’s supply chain and defense data.

Constellation

This project describes themselves as a distributed network for organizations needing to “process and transfer data and build interoperability for connected sensors and devices.”

According to the press release announcing the partnership, Constellation’s technology “will help securely unlock traditionally siloed and non-accessible data and data sources. This is commonly referred to as Multi-Domain Command and Control (MDC2) at the U.S. Air Force.”

The USAF provided the following statement: “AFRL and AFWERX have partnered to streamline the Small Business Innovation Research process in an attempt to speed up the experience, broaden the pool of potential applicants and decrease bureaucratic overhead.”

The VP of Business Development at Constellation, Benjamin Diggles, states, “the USAF has a multitude of data sources like drones, planes, and satellites that need to be secured. Clean and consolidated data that can be queried instantly is a big need within the defense apparatus.”

The technology can make many types of data interoperable and secure through the blockchain.

SIMBA

SIMBA states that they formed in 2017 through a grant awarded by the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) to Indiana Technology and Manufacturing Companies (ITAMCO) and the Center for Research Computing at the University of Notre Dame for the purpose of developing a “secure, unhackable messaging and transcription platform for the United States military.”

The result of this grant was a cloud-based smart-contract-as-a-service (SCaaS) platform “enabling users across a variety of skill sets to implement dapps (decentralized applications)” known as SIMBA Chain.

According to the press release, this platform will be used by the USAF for “Additive Manufacturing efforts on the battlefield and at home. The Air Force uses a complex supply chain to equip and repair forward-deployed forces and SIMBA Chain will play a key role in securing that chain.”

One example is the ability to send top-secret 3D print designs without a third-party having the ability to tamper or steal the information.

A project originating out of the Blockchain Approach for Supply Chain Additive Manufacturing Parts (BASECAMP) will use the SIMBA Chain for the registration and tracking of Additive Manufacturing (AM) components.

Blockchain Bootcamp

These initial projects give the technology the ability to prove itself in a military setting. By harnessing the benefits of distributed ledger, or blockchain, technology the United States Airforce hopes to achieve maximum data security and interoperability.

The USAF, hopefully, will serve as a loadstar for future blockchain integration into the military.
